Board of Education Meeting

Monday, December 11, 2017

7:30 p.m. at Bancroft

President Nottlemann called the regular Board of Education meeting to order on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Notice of the meeting was published five days prior to the meeting. 

Board members present were Trevor Bonneau, Pam Browning, Pat Browning, Naomi Brummond, Jason Gatzemeyer and Mike Nottlemann. Superintendent Cerny and school personnel were also present. 

President Nottlemann informed the public that a current copy of the “Open Meetings Act” is posted on the north wall of the library.

Motioned by Bonneau, seconded by Brummond to approve the special board minutes of the November 27, 2017 and the regular board minutes of the November 13, 2017 meeting as presented. Discussion. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried.

Motioned by Pat Browning, seconded by Brummond to allow payment of the invoices from the general fund. Discussion. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried.

Superintendent Cerny gave the financial review: November receipts $135,516; Disbursements $312,657; End of November cash balance $198,675; Building Fund checking $22,925; Depreciation Fund $37,384; Quality Capital Fund $5,610; Hot Lunch Fund $19,098 and Activity Fund $73,244.

Motioned by Gatzemeyer, seconded by Pam Browning to approve the December agenda as presented. Discussion.  RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried.

President Nottlemann stated that this time is set aside for the public portion of the meeting and asked if there was anyone who wished to address the board, and if not, the board will move on. No one spoke.

The administrator’s report consisted of: the November transportation report; Information on the school Health Savings Account program through HSABank, the Diode Technologies ANR security system upgrade totaling $1,950 and that half of the $30,000 grant from the Title IV will be going towards the Elementary Launch project with the other half going towards college and career readiness

Principal Sjuts’ report consisted of: semester tests will be December 19th through the 22nd. Students will have a maximum of two tests daily to allow more study time.

Mr. Sjuts presented the 2017 Summer Sports/Activities involvement for the BRLD students and fall sports summary. He also reported on Mr. Knaak’s summaries for the fall sports and that each coach wrote up recommendations for their sport. The BRLD principals and athletic directors recommended hiring back fall coaches for 2018-19: Football – Varsity Head - Dan Maresh, Assistants (4) – K. Elsasser, M. Peters, T.J. Hilsinger, W. Swanson; JH Head – J. Bellar, Assistants (2) B. Knaak and L. Sovde. Volleyball – Varsity Head –R. James, Assistants (2) Megan Long & Mindy Nottlemann; JH Head - K Boden, Assistant – P. Frank; Cross Country – Varsity - P. Timm and JH – S. Housch; Girls Golf – B. Rainer.

Principal Sjuts stated he was checking other schools to find out if they are doing anything special about a small summer break during all the summer activities.

There was no board committee reports or old business.

Motioned by Gatzemeyer, seconded by Pam Browning to accept the 2016-17 audit. Discussion. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried.

Motioned by Pam Browning, seconded by Gatzemeyer to accept the 2016-17 annual report. Discussion. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried.

Superintendent Cerny went over the “Annual Review of School Health Services” with the board.

President Nottlemann stated the Superintendent’s evaluations that he received back from the board showed no concerns, were complimentary and that basically everything was running smoothly. It was brought up as to whether the superintendent’s evaluation form should be revised, as it has been the same form for the past thirty years. The board asked Superintendent Cerny to check to see what other schools did for evaluating.

President Nottlemann asked if there was any further business. It was stated that Mr. Anderson, FFA instructor from Lyons-Decatur, would be at B-R on Thursday, December 14, during 8th period to visit with the junior high students explaining what FFA entails and that high school students are also welcome to attend.

Motioned by Bonneau, seconded by Gatzemeyer to go into executive session to discuss the superintendent’s evaluation. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. Motion carried. The board went into executive session at 8:53 p.m.

The board came out of executive session at 9:25 p.m.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, January 15, 2018 in Bancroft at 7:30 p.m.

Motioned by Brummond, seconded by Gatzemeyer to adjourn. RCV: Ayes – 6, Opposed – 0. The board adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
