3rd Graders explore fossil types

The third grade has been learning about fossils and the four types: trace, mold, cast and true-form fossils.

Trace fossils may be footprints, burrows or tunnels made by ancient animals or any other trace evidence of life many years ago.

Mold fossils are the actual imprint of an animal usually found in sedimentary rock.

Cast fossils are replicas of the original organism, providing an impression of the organism's original body structure without containing any, or at least very little, of its original organic material.

True-form fossils are body parts of an animal or remains of a substance. They are often formed when the organism is caught in ice, tree sap or tar. Complete features are left behind. True-form fossils can be many years old and perfectly preserved. Even soft tissue can remain intact.

The 3rd graders made mold and cast fossils and put them in the hallway for display.
