4th Graders learn about Nebraska geography
Social Studies' emphasis in 4th grade is on the study of Nebraska.
Students have been studying about the different landforms that cover Nebraska. The different landforms were the results of being at the bottom of an ocean millions of years ago and then being covered with glaciers. As the glaciers melted, streams formed turning into some of the major rivers.
To help students visualize that the western part of our state has a higher elevation than the eastern part of the state, students were put into groups to create a raised-relief map. Students followed directions for making dough out of flour, salt, oil and water. Students put the dough on their Nebraska cardboard cut-out, making the west side of the state higher than on the east side. Students painted their maps along with adding some of the major rivers in our state.
The students did a great job working in their groups and had fun learning about the geography of Nebraska, said 4th grade teacher Mrs. Colleen Elsasser.
