Lil' ones learning new things

The kindergarten class was busy the first three months of school.

In September, we walked to the Bancroft library and Neihardt Center in Bancroft. At the library, Miss Lesa read the book "Rainbow Fish," and we painted scales using celery. The children loved the painting project. At the Neihardt Center, the children looked in the study where Mr. Neihardt wrote famous books and poems, and the students thought the bronze sculpture was "huge."

The class also walked to the Bancroft Post Office one warm afternoon. Miss Sherry, the postmistress, let the students stamp a letter.

To get ready for our fall field trip to the Harvest Moon Pumpkin Patch near Oakland, Miss Jennifer and Miss Stacey from the Thurston County Extension office came to the kindergarten classroom to teach the children about the life cycle of a pumpkin. Miss Melissa, the 4-H Extension assistant from Cuming County, taught us about the food groups. The students have already learned about the grains and vegetable food groups. The best part of the nutrition unit was getting to try different foods from each food group.

Mrs. Nottlemann is another guest in the classroom, and she is teaching science lessons to the kindergarteners.

The students are learning some "tough" vocabulary words like structure and function. What great opportunities the kindergarten has had to expand their world and learn new things!
