Brings winning streak to 3

You could say Bancroft-Rosalie is on a winning streak.

For the third year in a row, a student from this small northeast Nebraska school was chosen as the winner of the First Congressional District Art Competition.

Jerrica Tietz, who graduated in May, was the winner the past two years, first with a moving pencil drawing of her niece and goddaughter titled “Faith” and last year with a lifelike pencil drawing of her grandparents titled “Love for a Lifetime.”

This year’s winner is Ashten Reil, who will be a senior this fall. Her entry is titled “Ella,” and is a pencil drawing of her cousin’s daughter. Ella’s mom is Tabby (Hawk) Fajardo, a 2006 B-R graduate.

“I don’t know how you keep doing it,” said Marie Woodhead with Congressman’s Jeff Fortenberry’s office in a letter to B-R art teacher Cory Meyer. “Your student, Ashten Reil, is the winner of the 1st Congressional District Art Competition for 2015! You are a superstar art teacher. Congrats!”

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning works are then displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Brianna Wegner, another recent grad, received one of two honorable mentions in the competition this year, her second year in a row receiving that honor. Her entry is being displayed for the summer in Fortenberry’s Lincoln office.
