- Students will understand differences in various genres of literature and their related literary elements.
12.1.4 Identify, analyze, and apply theme in literature and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
- Students will recognize themes common to several pieces of literature grouped together.

- Students will analyze works of literature for various literary devices.

poetry, drama, and literary nonfiction prose.

Writing
12.2.1 Identify, describe, and apply knowledge of the structure of the English language and Standard English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
- Students will use periods, question marks, commas, quotation marks, underlining, apostrophes, and other basic punctuation appropriately in increasingly more complex sentence structures.
- Students will avoid fragments and run-ons.
- Students will use capitalization appropriately.
- Students’ final drafts will contain few major departures from standard usage and punctuation conventions.
- Students will demonstrate their understanding of the various sentence structures by using an appropriate mix of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
12.2.2 Write compositions with a clear focus, logically related ideas, and adequate supporting detail.
- Students will clearly and concisely express original and interesting thoughts in their writings and will support such ideas with specific examples, details, statistics, research, etc.
- Students will base choices in writing on information gathered from instruction and experience and will be able to explain and defend their choices.
12.2.3 Demonstrate improvement in organization, content, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and Standard English conventions after revising and editing their compositions.
- Students will understand the difference between standard and nonstandard usage and the importance of editing their writing appropriately for the situation.
- Students will experience the four stages of the writing process.
- Students will evaluate their own writings, as well as accept constructive criticism from others, and revise accordingly.
12.2.4 Use a variety of forms to write for different audiences and purposes.
- Students will tailor writing styles to various purposes, audiences, subjects, and structures.
12.2.5 Use self-generated questions, note taking, summarizing, and outlining to enhance learning.
- Students will use appropriate procedures to prepare research reports.

- Given any style format, students will be able to construct a paper to conform to the appropriate guidelines.
Speaking
12.3.1 Pose questions and contribute their own information or ideas in class discussions in order to acquire new knowledge.
- Students will use appropriate vocal and non-vocal communication skills when presenting information in class.
- Students will interact appropriately in large and small group discussion.
12.3.2 Make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.

- Students will create increasingly more complex formal presentations using the basic speech structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion and the specific elements each segment contains.
- Students will analyze communications situations and use the appropriate degree of objectivity in dealing with various subjects for various purposes.
- Students will cite sources in presentations in ways that not only give credit to the sources, but also increase the credibility of the presentation.
