Writing
12.2.1 Identify, describe, and apply knowledge of the structure of the English language and standard English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
- Students will use periods, question marks, commas, quotation marks, underlining, apostrophes, hyphens, colons, and other basic punctuation appropriately in increasingly more complex sentence structures.
- Students will avoid fragments and run-ons.
- Students will use capitalization appropriately.
- Students will use sentence combining to create structure variety.
- Students’ final drafts will be free of major departures from standard usage and punctuation conventions.
12.2.2 Write compositions with a clear focus, logically related ideas, and adequate supporting detail.
- Students will clearly and concisely express original and interesting thoughts in their writings and will support such ideas with examples, details, etc.
12.2.3 Demonstrate improvement in organization, content, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and standard English conventions after revising and editing their compositions.
- Students will understand the difference between standard and nonstandard usage and edit their writing appropriately for the situation.
- Students will experience the four stages of the writing process and will complete all four.
- Students will evaluate their own writings, as well as accept constructive criticism from others, and revise accordingly.
12.2.4 Use a variety of forms to write for different audiences and purposes.
- Students will tailor writing styles to various purposes, audiences, subjects, and structures.
12.2.5 Use self generated questions, note taking, summarizing, and, outlining to enhance learning.

Speaking
12.3.1 Pose questions and contribute their own information or ideas in class discussions in order to acquire new knowledge.
- Students will use appropriate vocal and non-vocal communication skills when giving increasingly longer presentations in class.
- Students will interact appropriately in large and small group discussion.
12.3.2 Make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.
- Students will adjust the level of formality in communication to fit various situations.
- Students will use appropriate vocal and non-vocal communication skills when giving increasingly longer presentations in class.
- Students will create increasingly more complex formal presentations using the basic speech structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion and the specific elements each segment contains.
