Fourth Grade Reading

4.1.1 Draw on a variety of strategies to read unfamiliar words and phrases.

      -  Add endings (er, est, ing, ed, en, n), dropping e, changing y to i, and doubling the consonant

      - Alphabetize to the fourth letter or more

      - Divide and decode multi-syllable words

 

4.1.2 Acquire and use correctly an advanced reading vocabulary.

      -  Read possessive nouns and use correctly.

      -  Use prefixes (in, un, pre, re, pro, dis) and suffixes (ly, ful, less, ness, ment, able) to determine the meaning of an unknown word.

      -  Recognize and use correctly related words as synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs.

 

4.1.3 Identify the basic facts and essential ideas in what they have read or viewed.

      -  Identify the supporting details in a selection.

      -  Preview, predict, draw conclusions, and make inferences from a selection.

      -  Use the KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) strategy as an aid in reading and understanding a selection.

      -  Retell (summarize) a selection in an orderly manner.

      -  Read, understand, and follow written directions.

      -  Determine answers to specific questions using information from the selection and/or materials.

 

4.1.4 Locate, assess and evaluate resources to identify appropriate information.

      -  Use a dictionary to determine correct pronunciation, meaning, and usage of a word.

      -  Use an encyclopedia (printed volumes/CD-Rom) and an index to locate information on a simple subject.

      -  Create and use bar, line, and pictographs to show and interpret specific information.

 

4.1.5 Identify characteristics of different types of texts.

      -  Use supporting details to prove that a selection is realistic fiction, fantasy, or nonfiction.

 

  

4.1.6 Identify and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and meaning of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their answers.

      -  Identify the theme of a selection.

      -  Summarize a selection.

      -  Make inferences and draw conclusions using supporting details from the selection, updating them as needed.

      -  Recognize similes and metaphors as forms of figurative language.

 

4.1.7 Identify and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and meaning of nonfiction or informational material and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

      -  Distinguish between fact and opinion in nonfiction selections and develop an individual opinion based on the facts presented.

      -  Use supporting details to prove factual information.

 

4.1.8 Identify similar ideas across a variety of narratives and stories.

      -  Read and compare narratives and stories across geographic regions, cultures, and time periods.

      -  Read and compare narratives and stories to students’ present day lives.

      -  Read biographies of historical figures.

 

4.2.1 Identify, describe, and apply knowledge of the structure of the English language and standard English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

      -  Write a simple paragraph using correct form, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and grade appropriate spelling.

 

4.2.2 Write compositions with a clear focus, logically related ideas, and adequate supporting details.

      -  Write a several paragraph report pertaining to one topic to convey factual information.

 

4.2.3 Demonstrate improvement in organization, content, word choice (vocabulary), voice, sentence fluency and standard English conventions after revising and editing their compositions.

      -   Proofread and edit several paragraphs recognizing the need for capital letters, punctuation, grade appropriate usage, structure, and spelling to communicate information in writing or on a word processor.

      -  Write cursive letters, letter connections, words, and sentences legibly and correctly.

  

4.2.4 Use a variety of forms to write for different audiences and purposes.

      -  Write paragraphs and stories for personal enjoyment that can be shared with a variety of audiences.

      -  Write and edit grade appropriate compositions/reports or publication or display.

      -  Write a friendly letter using the correct form.

 

4.2.5 Use self generated questions, note taking, summarizing, and outlining to enhance learning.

      -  Write self generated questions about a selection using the Preview and Predict, KWL, Stop and Think, and SQRRR strategies.

      -  Write notes about a selection using a formal outline form.

      -  Write a written summary of a selection.

 

 

SPEAKING

 

4.3.1 Pose questions and contribute their own information or ideas in group discussions in order to acquire new knowledge.

      -  Use subject related vocabulary in contributing knowledge and asking questions relevant to a topic.

      -  Distinguish between information that is relevant or irrelevant to a topic.

      -  Provide accurate directions while assuming various roles in large and small groups.

 

4.3.2 Make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.

      -  Give oral presentations using proper pace, volume, enunciation, and eye contact with consideration for the intended audience.

      -  Give an oral presentation that was developed by following predetermined guidelines.

 

 

LISTENING

 

4.4.1 Gain information or complete tasks by listening.

      -  Listen to and follow multiple step oral directions.

      -  Use active listening, showing consideration of others’ contributions to discussions in small and large group situations.

      -  Listen to an oral presentation, taking notes to help improve comprehension skills.
