4.1.1 Draw on a variety of strategies to read unfamiliar words and phrases.
- Decode words that contain vowel pairs (ay, ee, ie, oa, ow, ea, ai,) or digraphs (oo, ea, ei, au, and aw)
- Decode words that contain diphthongs (ow, oi, oy, ew, and ou)
- Decode words that contain consonant digraphs (sh, wh, th, ch, ck, kn, gn, wr, gh, ph, tch,)
- Alphabetize to the third letter
4.1.2 Acquire and use correctly an advanced reading vocabulary.
-Identify a compound word as a word made up of two smaller words with a meaning that may or may not be derived from the meanings of the two smaller words.
4.1.3 Identify the basic facts and essential ideas in what they have read or viewed.
- Identify the main idea of a selection.
- Identify the problem, events, and ending in a selection.
4.1.4 Locate, assess and evaluate resources to identify appropriate information.
- Locate a word or subject in a dictionary, glossary, or encyclopedia using alphabetical order.
- Use a table of contents to locate specific information.
- Use line graphs, circle graphs, tables, charts and diagrams to interpret information and answer questions.
4.1.5 Identify characteristics of different types of texts.
- Recognize characteristics of realistic fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction selections.
- Read a variety of poetry for enjoyment and interpretation of the author’s intended message.
4.1.6 Identify and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and meaning of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their answers.
- Identify problem, events, and ending in a selection.
- Review a selection and make predictions based on selection title, pictures, and reading a paragraph or page.
- Compare and contrast similarities and differences in characters and events in a variety of reading selections.
4.1.7 Identify and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and meaning of nonfiction or informational material and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
- Identify the main idea in nonfiction selections.
- Recognize that nonfiction selections contain facts that can be proven correct or incorrect.
- Recognize that nonfiction selections contain both facts and opinions.
- Use charts and diagrams to aid in understanding nonfiction materials.
4.1.8 Identify similar ideas across a variety of narratives and stories.
- Read and compare narratives and stories across geographic regions, cultures, and time periods.
- Read and compare narratives and stories to students’ present day lives.
- Read biographies of historical figures.
WRITING
4.2.1 Identify, describe, and apply knowledge of the structure of the English language and Standard English conventions for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
- Write a simple command or exclamation using a capital letter, correct punctuation, structure, and grade appropriate spelling to communicate a thought.
- Write a group of sentences that pertain to the same topic using correct punctuation, structure, and grade appropriate spelling.
4.2.2 Write compositions with a clear focus, logically related ideas, and adequate supporting details.
- Write several simple sentences that pertain to one main idea to complete a paragraph.
- Write a story pertaining to one topic with a beginning, middle, and end.
4.2.3 Demonstrate improvement in organization, content, word choice (vocabulary), voice, sentence fluency and Standard English conventions after revising and editing their compositions.
- Proofread and edit a paragraph recognizing the need for capital letters, punctuation, grade appropriate usage, structure, and spelling to communicate a thought in writing or on a word processor.
- Read cursive handwriting.
- Write cursive upper case and lower case letters and words legibly and correctly.
- Transcribe manuscript or printed text into cursive.
4.2.4 Use a variety of forms to write for different audiences and purposes.
- Write simple stories for personal enjoyment that can be shared with a variety of audiences.
- Write and edit grade appropriate compositions for publication or display.
- Write a simple thank you note or personal message for publication.
4.2.5 Use self generated questions, note taking, summarizing, and outlining to enhance learning.
- Write self generated questions about a selection using the Preview and Predict, KWL, and Stop and Think strategies.
- Write notes about a selection using word webs; story mapping; and topic, main idea, and supporting detail forms.
SPEAKING
4.3.1 Pose questions and contribute their own information or ideas in group discussions in order to acquire new knowledge.
- Gain the floor in grade appropriate ways in small and large group situations.
- Contribute knowledge and ask questions relevant to a topic, clarifying and redirecting the discussion as needed.
4.3.2 Make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.
- Give oral presentations using proper pace, volume, and enunciation with consideration for the intended audience.
- Give oral presentations using grade appropriate fluency and expression with consideration for the intended audience.
LISTENING
4.4.1 Gain information or complete tasks by listening.
- Listen to and follow two step oral directions.
- Demonstrate the characteristics of an active listener during discussions.
- Answer questions using information gained by listening to an oral presentation.
