Curriculum: Language Arts

First Grade Reading

1.1.1 Read and write most of the words they speak

      -  Discover methods to decode words by using word attack skills including:

      - Consonant sounds, long and short vowel sounds, consonants r and l.

      - Blends in initial and final positions, initial and final digraphs (wh, ch, th, sh) and word endings.

 

1.1.2 Students will demonstrate basic phonological awareness and           familiarity with the letters of the alphabet exhibiting a working                        knowledge of letters and sounds.

      -  Decode words that contain y in the final position having the sound of long e and I.  

      -  Give examples of vowels and their short and long sounds.

      -  Give examples of base words and plurals that end in s.

      -  List words in alphabetical order to the first letter.

 

1.1.3 Students will apply knowledge of the organization of print to their                      reading and writing.

      - Recognize when a group of words is a sentence.

      - Identify a noun (naming word) and a verb (action word)

      - Identify and write singular and plural nouns ending in s.

 

1.1.4 Students will read and comprehend print and demonstrate the            understanding that reading (like conversation) communicates meaning.

      -  Retell, in their own words, stories in sequence (beginning, middle, end)

      -  Distinguish between truth and make-believe in literature

      -  Read and explain their own writing and drawing.

 

1.1.5 Students will respond to literature.

      -  Listen to literary selections.

      -  Retell literary selections they have heard.

      -  Provide, in their own words, the meaning of selected vocabulary from literary selections. 

 

1.1.6 Students will print neatly and correctly, using correct formation of             lower case and capital manuscript letters.

      -  Print using appropriate starting points and strokes for the alphabet.

      -  Print using a left to right, top to bottom progression.

      -  Print uppercase and lowercase letters with recognizable accuracy and comfort.

  

1.1.7 Students will write (print) about experiences, stories, people,                         objects, and events.

      -  Write two or three sentences on a given topic or idea.

      -  Spell words from the grade level materials.

      -  Proofread at the appropriate grade level (correct spelling, punctuation, and

  capitalization.

 

 

SPEAKING

 

1.2.1 Students will speak in clear, complete, coherent sentences using                         standard English.

      -  Participate in-group discussion, using clear and complete sentences.

      -  Recall information in a sequential order.

                                

 

LISTENING

 

1.3.1 Students will listen and be responsible members of the classroom.

      -  Look at the speaker and listen to the speaker

      - Follow oral directions
