1.1.1 Read and write most of the words they speak
- Begin to recognize grade-level high frequency words in context spell short vowel words
1.1.2 Students will demonstrate basic phonological awareness and familiarity with the letters of the alphabet exhibiting a working knowledge of letters and sounds
- Name the letters of the alphabet
- Identify beginning and ending sounds
- Associate a particular letter with a particular sound
- Correctly put the letters of the alphabet in order
1.1.3 Students will apply knowledge of the organization of print to their reading and writing
- Demonstrate Left-Right directionality
- Discriminate between letter, word and sentence
- Determine the use of capitals letters at grade level
1.1.4 Students will read and comprehend print, and demonstrate the understanding that reading (like conversation) communicates meaning
- Make predictions based on the cover and title
- Retell a story in his/her own words
- Distinguish between real and make-believe stories
- Recall a sequence of events in the story
- Use picture clues to help predict and understand the meaning of a story
- Identify what an author does
- Identify what an illustrator does
- Demonstrate correct book handling
1.1.5 Students will respond to literature
- Define grade-level vocabulary words
- Relate literature to their own personal experiences
- Enjoy a variety of literature types
1.1.6 Students will print neatly and correctly using correct letter formation of lower case and upper case manuscript letters
- Write his/her full name using correct letter formation
- Write upper and lower case letters with correct formation
1.1.7 Students will write (print) about experiences, stories, people, objects and events.
- Write one sentence with correct spacing between words, ending punctuation and capital letters
Speaking
1.2.1 Students will speak in clear, complete, coherent sentences using standard English
- Contribute to group discussions
- Describe people, places and things in his/her environment
- Generate telling and asking questions
- Convey messages in complete sentences
Listening
1.3.1 Students will listen and be responsible members of the classroom
- Listen to a variety of literature read aloud to them
- Follow 3 step oral directions
- Demonstrate active listening skills (quiet hands, feet and mouth, look at speaker and sit still) for increasing periods of time
